Best routes with children
Valencia is flat, has many shady parks and excellent bike paths. This makes it one of the best cities in Spain to cycle with children. Here are the routes I recommend most to families:
1
Jardín del Turia (the absolute favorite)
9 km car-free park in the old riverbed. This is the #1 route for families.
- • Completely car-free and safe
- • Many playgrounds, fountains and picnic spots
- • Gulliver Park (giant where children can climb)
- • Connects the center with the City of Arts and Sciences
- • Ideal for children aged 4 to 12
2
Turia → City of Arts → Beach
The most complete family route (12-16 km).
- • Cycle through the beautiful Turia park
- • Visit the futuristic Calatrava buildings (very impressive for kids)
- • Continue to Playa de las Arenas or Malvarrosa
- • Eat paella by the sea as a reward
3
El Cabanyal & the harbor (shorter option)
Quieter route, perfect for younger children or if you want to cycle less distance.
Practical tips for cycling with children
Age and type of bike
- 4-7 years: Child seat on the back or trailer
- 7-11 years: Own children's bike (many rental companies have 20" and 24")
- 12+ years: Adult bike or e-bike (if they can handle the distance)
Important points of attention
- Avoid the heat: In summer (July-August) only cycle early in the morning or after 5pm. Bring enough water.
- Helmet: Mandatory for children under 16. Optional for adults (but strongly recommended).
- Shade: The Turia Gardens provide a lot of shade, the beaches and City of Arts much less.
- Break moments: Plan stops at playgrounds or for an ice cream/horchata.
Where to rent children's bikes and seats?
There are good rental companies in the center and near the Turia. Always ask in advance for:
- Child helmets in the right size
- Child seats or trailers
- Bikes with low step-through
Tip: Book your bikes preferably the day before. In high season the good children's bikes sell out quickly.
Why a private bike tour with a guide is smarter with children
Many families start by cycling themselves via Valenbisi or a regular rental company. That works fine for a short ride, but for a real day with children, a private tour with a local guide is often much more relaxed and fun:
Cycling by yourself
- • You have to plan the route yourself
- • No help if something goes wrong or kids get tired
- • No background stories
- • You set the pace yourself (can be stressful)
Private tour with Albano
- • Pace fully adapted to the children
- • I know the nicest stops and playgrounds
- • Stories and games along the way
- • Help if kids get tired or hungry
- • Quality bikes + children's equipment
Best time to cycle with children
The whole year is possible, but these periods are the most pleasant:
- March – June and September – November: Ideal weather, not too hot.
- July – August: Only early in the morning or late in the evening. Take e-bikes if it's hot.
- Winter (Dec-Feb): Often sunny and mild, but colder in the morning. Good for active families.
